Google announced this morning that they added a new way to verify your domain name and properties in Google Search Console. Now you can do this via or via DNS CNAME, not just TXT check via DNS.

There has been some confusion about this, but yes, CNAME is the new verification method, as confirmed by Google’s Daniel Waisberg Twitter.

Google said: “We are pleased to announce that starting today you will be able to verify your website on Google Search Console using the DNS CNAME record.”

Here are all the supported verification methods:

Details of the verification method

  • Uploading an HTML file
  • HTML tag
  • Domain provider
  • Google Analytics tracking code
  • Snippet of the Google Tag Manager container
  • Google Sites
  • Blogger
  • Google Domains

DNS seems to be one of the most popular for a while now. The new thing is that Google previously allowed DNS verification via TXT, now Google also supports CNAME.

For more details on how this DNS CNAME check works, see this help document.

The reason for the confusion is that the old Google Webmaster Tools supported the CNAME method a long time ago, but not Google Search Console:
