I’m weird, I love user generated comments, and while tons of blogs have removed them years ago, I’ve kept them here. I do my best to remove spam comments and keep comments free of spam. Google’s John Mueller recently said that it will not index the comments page, instead removing spam and keeping the good comments.
John continued to write Twitter “I wouldn’t index the comments page.” I just said, “you need to make sure this is the type of content you want to post on your site.” “Some comments can be very helpful, other comments are just spam. Keep the good ones,” he added.
I totally agree, but if you can’t manage comments on your site, then you probably want to disable comments altogether. Not indexing pages with comments so that search engines don’t see them, but users do, doesn’t make much sense. You want to make sure that what you’re showing users is as good or better than what you’re showing search engines.
