Google announced the new Google Tag, which Google says will “unlock new capabilities to help you do more, improve data quality, and adopt new features — without the need for additional code.” Google Tag Manager is not changing today, but it looks like it will change in the future.

Google explained that “The Google Tag (gtag.js) is a single tag that you can add to your website to use different Google products and services. Instead of managing multiple tags for different Google product accounts, you can use the Google Tag throughout your website and connect a multi-target tag.”

For the previous tag, Google said you need to set the global site tag (gtag.js). The global site mark “evolved into the Google mark,” Google wrote. Your Google tag (gtag.js) has a single tag ID that you can add to your website to use various Google products and services. Instead of managing multiple tags for different Google product accounts, you can use one Google tag across your entire site and associate the tag ID with multiple targets, Google added.

The new “Google Tag” screen will replace the existing Global Site Tags screens in Google Ads and Google Analytics, giving you access to measurement features without adding code after initial setup. Changing the settings in your Google tag will affect all related targets.
