There has never been a better time than now for web developers to approach SEO.

The speed with which tools and resources, both new tools and everything known, introduce innovations to us and open up opportunities for us, also requires us to stay in step. Lately, this has meant more performance optimization requests than those issued by Google algorithm updates and changes in measurement calculations.

One tool you should know is WebPageTest. They have recently released some incredibly useful new fully integrated test tools.

WebPageTest now authorizes, via Netlify, user-defined real-time HTML changes to perform benchmarking directly in their user interface. No coding required.

Genius makes sense

The smart logic of the app in three extensive areas of concern offers you bubbles, but not just with text blurrs, with re-test options ready to run combinations of versions for comparison. The set of tests currently available in WebPageTest means there will be no more setting up tests using third-party proxy tools that duplicate what you can test directly.

This was all technically possible before and the original approach is still important.

Although it is impressively comprehensive, there will always be tests available that you will need to perform using a proxy host of your choice. However, this requires JavaScript and Cloudflare processing.

With WebPageTest you can point and click.

Competent laboratory data

Always keep in mind that the best possible combination of numbers from lab tests may not yield the same numbers in the field. In fact, it can cause corrupt site functions.

Scripts and styles have a upload order defined by the developer, where any change can mean a discontinued change that is not suitable for production. A proxy host can provide access to QA as part of the optimization process.

This warning tells you how great it is to have a test board to display HTML optimizations. It has been the basis of our workshops and conferences for more than a year.

Ours Search Engine Country guide articles can help you set up a test board. We will use an updated version on SMX Advanced. Join us live if you succeed.

Opportunities

The text of the WebPageText option is available to everyone in the reports.

You will no longer need JavaScript knowledge to perform HTML version comparisons. Instead, you will need a paid account to run the built-in proxy tests Experiments.

A free account gives you better access to reports and history, but it doesn’t experiment. You can still write JavaScript and proxy your own tests for free.

It’s just not even about as handy and takes too much time.

Free opportunities. Paid bill for experiments.

Experiments

Select the Opportunities and Experiments menu item in the WebPageTest report and you will see a comprehensive list of findings.

The opportunities here stem from the actual test conditions (simulated with hardware where possible). Our test showed an opportunity to re-test experimentation with render-blocking source versions (usually JavaScript and CSS), lazily uploaded images, third-party self-hosted scripts, and more.

Versions require a Pro account

Try asynchronous, delayed, or even embedded scripts and style sheets using the interface. To pass these tests, we wrote Cloudflare Worker JavaScript, and added built-in style rules to delay loading content to the bottom of the page, including the footer. The initial set of WebPageTest integrations can handle most of our original tests, but not all.

It is now quick to put together the tests.

Change test settings and start running versions to perfect yourself on the holy grail of green Core Web Vitals in all areas. The offer is incredibly extensive and covers much more than what affects the operation of websites.

You will find three categories that combine opportunities to experiment with the following questions:

  • Is it fast? Speed categorizes and combines efficiency optimization attempts.
  • Is it useful? The utility combines HTML validation errors that can interfere with screen readers and things that affect layout movements.
  • Is it resistant? Resilience refers to security concerns, including mixed protocols. Change the experiment settings using the check box interface and start running versions. You will get more detailed options in the comparative report.

Dashboard control panel

WebPageTest should be similar to the test panel control panel and it succeeds within reporting, which provides more detail than Lighthouse and with a much better presentation of the waterfall diagram than a tool for Chrome developers.

While it’s true that you can perform HTML and click experiments in a “code-free” environment, the details and navigation provided require experience – and the coding experience is the best.

A new built-in experiment duplicates another Cloudflare worker task by removing all JavaScript. Having such things so accessible is extremely convenient as writing a script for test versions.

Advanced experiments allow us to embed HTML in key locations, test tactics to change the order of loading, non-loading, or change resources, including downsizing.

Technically, there’s literally nothing stopping us from trying out practically anything on either side.

Fall into the pit of success

The comparison reports themselves guide you in choosing and re-testing multiple versions. The results measurement banner includes color-coded improvement and deterioration results during control and experiment.

Below is a section on remaining opportunities with a subset of test switches. You can click your way to significant improvements.

We’ve worked hard to write demonstration tests on SMX Advanced, and when we’re live, you can expect us to cover this big update to the tools we’ve used. It will be easier that way.

We’ll see if the fast text cycle of WebPageTest experiment integrations gains what we’ve been preparing. Let’s see if we can get green around the world.
