The April list of the 100 most visited sites in the U.S. showed a noticeable 15 percent drop in traffic, offsetting a 15 percent jump from last month. More than 80% of the sites were in the negative traffic area, only 19 sites gained a few visitors.

With Google as the absolute leader in traffic (as usual), even the largest search engine recorded a significant 9% drop in visitors. This is after a 14% increase in traffic in March, so the comparative losses are not so great.

As for the 10 most visited websites in the US, they all witnessed a drop in traffic, led by Twitter (-17%). In most cases, however, the traffic pattern was similar to Google’s: a significant March gain that April losses outweigh by about the same difference.

If we look at the sites that have witnessed the biggest trend of declining traffic, we can immediately notice that news and media sites have been among the most affected. CNN, like CNN, has recorded double-digit declines.

Among other “losers” we see Pinterest – the platform lost 71% of its digital traffic compared to the previous month. This may be related to the fact that Pinterest noticed noticeable jumps in interest between October and December (the hottest shopping season), but as the shopping bonanza slowed, so did traffic.

Realtor – one of the largest real estate-related websites in the US – also recorded a significant drop in traffic (-54%). As the economy shifts into uncertainty, real estate also seems to have cooled.

As for the April winners, their profits have been rather modest, so there may be an occasional increase in turnover that does not represent a pattern.
